Commission for Environmental Cooperation (CEC) is releasing an updated map layer of North America’s terrestrial protected areas as part of the North American Environmental Atlas.
The 2010 data has more than 200,000 areas in the dataset, 50 percent more than were reported in the 2008 data. Terrestrial protected areas is one of more than 40 map layers already available to view and download free of charge.

New web portal provides free and open access to information on antarctic marine species.
The SCAR-MarBIN portal lets users browse, see and search different types of data, including over 2000 photos and videos. Entries are geo-referenced so users can discover what is found where.
The database now offers access to over one million records from 120 datasets. This was one of the ambitious objectives for the end of the International Polar Year (IPY). The data is updated by more than 70 experts worldwide. SCAR-MarBIN makes it possible to instantly download data and map the occurrence and abundance of polar marine organisms.

Wildscreen is delighted to be contributing content to the newest version of Google Earth, which enables users to dive beneath the surface of the sea and explore the world’s oceans.
Wildscreen is a charity working to promote conservation and an appreciation of biodiversity through wildlife imagery. The organisation’s ARKive initiative, which is audio visually profiling the world’s most threatened species, has made a layer which includes film and photographs, to add unique content to Google Earth.

This marine protected areas tool (www.wdpa-marine.org), created by the United Nations Environment Programme’s World Conservation Monitoring Centre (UNEP-WCMC) with the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN), is part of the recently redeveloped World Database on Protected Areas (WDPA) – the authoritative and most globally comprehensive list of marine and terrestrial protected areas.
